2008 triathlon a resounding success

Thank you to everyone who took part in the SPW Hyde Park triathlon in association with Speedo on Sunday. We hope you all enjoyed the event as much as SPW did and look forward to seeing you all again next year.

The 2008 SPW Hyde Park triathlon in associatio with Speedo attracted over 200 people and raised more than £60,000 for SPW’s work with young people in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, the UK and USA. We would like to thank European triathlon medallist and four times national title holder Annie Emmerson for starting the race and also Olympic gold medallist and open-water rowing legend James Crackell and Bernard Jenkin, MP for North Essex and Former Deputy Chairman for the Conservative Party for taking part.

The winner of the men’s category was Tyler O'Callaghan, who completed the sprint course in 49 minutes and 43 seconds. The winning team, team Tri247, had a time of 53 minutes and 25 seconds. Kate Pickard won the women’s category in 55 minutes and 1 second.

Kate said: “I absolutely loved the race – every second of it. Being a South African, SPW’s work is close to my heart and I look forward to taking part again next year. This race is going to become a big one in the future”. Kate began competing in triathlon in 2007.

Leo Oldfield was presented with a prize of dinner for two at the House of Commons by Bernard Jenkin for being the highest fundraiser of the event. She has rasied £6,500. She said: “The triathlon is both a great cause and a challenge. It is a great feeling to know that I am contributing to SPW’s work with young people in Africa and South Asia”

SPW Chief Executive Eric Levine, who ran the 5km running leg of the race as part of a team. said: “The day was a great success. Not only did it provide an opportunity for seasoned triathletes and newcomers to meet and compete, but it also raised money that will go directly to our work with young people. A big thank you to all competitors and Speedo for their generous support”.
